The BCSF 2006 Micro-technology Seminars mini-review

The 2006 BCSF Micro-technology seminars at the NEAT were very successful as usual.  The program and flyer for this year are included elsewhere on this site.

The BCSF Seminars contributors this year were:

Their contributions are very much appreciated.

All the seminars speakers did a great “show and tell” job.  Many aspects of our micro-modeling hobby were explained in detail and many new projects and models were displayed.  Some models were flown inside the 40’ x 40’ BCSF tent.

PLANTRACO’s Bud and Ramon didn’t make it to the NEAT because of heavy production priorities.  Fred Marks could not make it because of a recent shoulder injury.  They all sent their love to the NEAT attendees.

It was delightful to see the young micro-modelers, Ben, Billy and Jonathan getting together and exchanging ideas, parts, having so much fun talking to each other and flying their incredible models.  That was the first time they all met each other.  This is the young blood and the future of our micro-modeling world.

Also the grown-up micro-modelers, Matt Keennon, Peter Muren, Martin Newell and Robert Guillot had a ball as well.  Every one of all those micro-modelers was amazed with everybody else’s creations and ideas.  They are all amazing and they are all crazy.   You inevitably get to that conclusion when you see what they do with some parts of models. Sub-gram models were common place amongst themselves.  They spend 2 days making one tiny wheel, they split carbon fiber rods, they make 2mg power switches, they trim LiPo cells that everybody else is afraid to touch, they spend days to paint carefully a wing, they file down to nothing Infrared sensors to save a few milligrams, they make their own 40mg receivers, magnetic actuators, muscle-wire actuators, motors, hinges, propellers, etc, etc.  They are all approaching the extreme limits of insanity.  However, as incredible as all this sounds, they outdo themselves every year.  Whatever seemed to be impossible the year before, they manage to conquer a year later.

I’m certainly looking forward to the 2007 NEAT’s unbelievable creations and meeting with the unbelievable creators.
